I have been colouring my hair since I was a teenager. In my early twenties I went through the white platinum stage thanks to my favourite TV show (cue red faced embarrassment) "Girls of the Playboy Mansion". My hair is naturally brown so you can only imagine the damage that was done to it from my monthly bleaching sessions at the salon.
I had one awful experience when my regular stylist was not available and a different girl bleached my already white and broken hair from scalp to tip. I left the salon with a crown of broken hair, much like a cockatoo lol!! My hair nightmare didn't stop there. I then moved overseas and decided to take my colouring into my own hands...very bad idea. My hair had turned to jelly and combined with an autoimmune disease all my hair fell out (picture Brittney Spears after she shaved her head and it just started to grow back). Basically it took about 4 years and the care of a new stylist to grown my hair out and restore it to health again.
If only there was Olaplex back then...
I had heard some YouTuber's mentioning Olaplex in their reviews and really liked the sound of it. I wasn't sure what to expect but as a total beauty lover I just had to try it out for myself to see what all the hype was about.
What is Olaplex?
I am not a hairdresser but from what I understand it is a bond multiplier containing the single active ingredient "Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol. This means it repairs hair by linking the damaged bonds back together before, during and after chemicals and heat are used on the hair. Stylists are able to lighten the hair more and leave bleach on longer without frying the hair.
You can just get an Olaplex treatment or have a stylist mix the product in with your colour. I had mine mixed in as step 1. Step 2 was then applied at the basin and left on as a treatment. I was then given a small bottle to take home to use as an after care treatment.
So the question is did it work? Firstly I was surprised at the price. It was really affordable. The price to add to my service was $35. To have a treatment and blow dry on its own was only $50. My hair is stronger, softer and has more shine. I always use hair masks but Olaplex is on another level. I have had less shedding, it is thicker and healthy. Olaplex is an amazing product and I will always use it to have my hair coloured from now on.
